Shuman Highlights List of 2011 Illinois PGA Award Winners

Andy Shuman GLENVIEW, Ill. - Andy Shuman, PGA director of golf at Twin Orchard Country Club in Long Grove, Ill., has been named the 57th recipient of the Illinois PGA Golf Professional of the Year, the highest annual honor bestowed by the Illinois PGA on a PGA Professional.

A member of The PGA of America since 1992, Shuman began his professional career more than 24 years ago as an apprentice assistant at Twin Orchard Country Club. He would go on to learn the duties of a PGA Professional from some of the best in the business. In addition to his outstanding skills as a PGA Professional, Shuman has excelled on the golf course as a competitor. He is a three-time winner of the Illinois PGA Assistant Championship and two-time winner of the Illinois PGA Players Championship (formally the Fall Classic), the fourth and final major on the Illinois PGA calendar. His outstanding play earned him the 1996 Illinois PGA Assistant Player of the Year Award. This is Shuman’s third award in the Illinois PGA.

"It’s a great honor to be named the Illinois PGA Professional of the Year," said Shuman. "It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers. There are so many great golf professionals in Illinois and to win this award knowing how many outstanding professionals we have in the Illinois PGA is really special."

Shuman will be honored at the Illinois PGA Special Awards Reception on Wednesday, October 19 at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club. The awards program begins at 8:00 p.m., preceded by a 7:00 p.m. dinner reception. The evening’s program will feature all 2011 Illinois PGA Award winners.

Four Members to be Inducted Into Illinois Golf Hall of Fame

Wilson Golf GLENVIEW, Ill. - Notable local players Steve Benson of Buffalo Grove, Ill., and the late Robert A. Gardner of Hinsdale, Ill., head the four-member class of inductees that also features Sherm Finger of Lake Bluff, Ill., and long-time golf course superintendent Paul Voykin of Lake Bluff, Ill., all of whom will be enshrined as the 2011 class in the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.

The inductees will be honored at a ceremony celebrating their achievements October 21st at the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame exhibit located at The Glen Club in Glenview, Ill.

The Illinois Golf Hall of Fame is located at The Glen Club, in Glenview, Ill. Plaques, trophies, photographs, and other related memorabilia make up a first-class tribute to those individuals who have made significant contributions to the game both in Illinois and throughout the world.

Illinois PGA Announces Wilson Golf as Golf Level Partner

Wilson Golf GLENVIEW, Ill. - The Illinois PGA is pleased to announce that Wilson Golf has signed a three-year sponsorship agreement, which officially began on April 1, 2011. Wilson Golf will be a presenting sponsor and the exclusive golf equipment manufacturer of the Illinois Open Championship through 2013.

The 62nd Illinois Open Championship is scheduled to be conducted July 25-27, at Hawthorn Woods (Ill.) Country Club. Administered by the Illinois PGA since 1950, the Illinois Open has historical roots dating back to 1922. The "state championship of golf" is a 54-hole competition contested over three days to determine the finest player in the state of Illinois. The tournament is open to professionals and amateurs with a handicap of 10 or less who reside within the state of Illinois. Qualifying events conducted throughout the month of June finalize the championship field to the top 156 players.

Casey Brozek Elected 23rd President of the Illinois PGA

Casey Brozek GLENVIEW, Ill. - Casey Brozek of Cary, Ill., was recently elected the 23rd President of the Illinois Professional Golfers' Association of America by members at the Association's Fall Annual Meeting.

Brozek succeeds Trey VanDyke of Riverside, Ill., who will continue to serve on the Illinois PGA Board of Directors as Honorary President. Succeeding Brozek as Vice President is Mike Scully of Elgin, Ill, who served the past year as Secretary of the Illinois PGA.

Jim Opp of Palatine, Ill. was elected Secretary. In addition, four new members of the Illinois PGA Board of Directors were sworn into office.

Brozek, 39, has been the PGA head golf professional at Crystal Lake (Ill.) Country Club for the past ten years. A PGA member since 1999, Brozek has served on the Illinois PGA Board of Directors since 2004, where he contributed to a variety of committees, including his service as the chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee. In 2004, his peers awarded him the Horton Smith Award, given for his outstanding and continuing contributions to member education. Born in Green Bay, Wis., Brozek attended the University of Kansas, where he earned his degree in communications and was recognized as an NCAA Academic All American.

"The Illinois PGA is excited as Casey begins his term as President of our Section," said Michael Miller, executive director of the Illinois PGA. "His dedication to the advancement of the Illinois PGA and its membership has been truly inspiring. There is no doubt we will continue to benefit from his leadership as President."
